Lucas, double-oh-penguin

Recently Lucas has really gotten into spy games with his brother. He loves sneaking around and spying on his family members, then running off giggling to report whatever he has observed to another family member. He's even decided that he's going to be a spy when he grows up (in addition to--not instead of--his previous career choices: airplane captain and rock star). But not just any spy. No, he's going to be a spy penguin. That way he can slide across surfaces quickly, dive under water, and, well, do whatever else penguins can do well. He's even taken to walking like a penguin at times and speaking "penguin" (which, according to him, sounds like "squaggle squaggle").

This afternoon he merged his loves of penguins, espionage, and rock music and composed a series of songs about being a spy penguin. He called us into his bedroom to listen to his performance. Before he started, he said, "We need to pray first."

"Okay," I said, bowing my head.

"Mom. No," he said, waving his hands around casually. "It's just a fake prayer." Then he proceeded, "Dear Jesus, help me to sing my spy penguin songs well. Amen."

"Okay," he continued as we all tried not to laugh, "you all need to sit nicely on my bed." We did. "And you need to clap for me." We obliged. "And Mom? You're gonna want to get the camera for this."

After I stopped laughing, I prodded him to just sing already, and he finally started singing...

Oh I want to be a penguin spy!
Oh I want to be a penguin spy!
Oh I want to be a penguin spy!
Oh yeah...uh huh...oh yeah...uh huh...oh yeah.

And if I see a dinosaur I will shoot it!
And if I see a dinosaur from my plane, I will shoot it!
And if I see a dinosaur I will shoot it!
Oh yeah...squaggle squaggle...oh YEAH!

All of this was sung at the top of his lungs while hanging from his bunk bed by one hand with the other arm outstretched in dramatic fashion.

I wish I'd had the camera out.

He tried to warn me.
