"The Face of Free China"

Mike found this amazing CIA Film Library video about Taiwan the other day. It's from the days when Taiwan was considered by the US and most other countries to be the "real" China, and the government here to be the "real" Chinese government (in exile, with hopes of returning to the Mainland someday).

The video is almost 30 minutes long, but if you have an interest in Taiwan, it's well worth the watch. It covers daily life, industry, education, religion, and infrastructure in Taiwan in the 1960s, and is full of amazing shots from around the island half a century ago. We especially enjoyed watching the bits filmed in Taipei--it's hard to believe that the huge, modern, bustling city we live in today and the dusty, laid-back town seen on the video are the same place, yet we did see many landmarks that we recognized (including a round-about with an old city gate in the middle that we drive through every week). The views in the city sure were different back then without all of the huge buildings.

Transport yourself to the Taiwan of 1960 and enjoy!

Nice video. It's amazing how fast Taiwan has developed in 50 years.
